Dear Symposium Attendee:
First and foremost, thanks for attending and contributing to the first Global DNS Security, Stability, and Resiliency Symposium last week in Atlanta. The frank and open breakout sessions were quite informative and productive. If you took notes or pictures of whiteboards and would like to share them with the other attendees, please send them to this address and we will make them available with the other notes in raw (and non-attributed) format.
As a reminder, if you haven’t already done so, please provide us your thoughts on the Symposium.
Finally, the symposium invitee list and non-attributed raw notes will be available from the symposium website shortly. The overall report from the Symposium will be drafted by next Thursday (19 Feb 09) and released to the Steering Committee for review. The report will be available for comment to all attendees by 2 Mar 09, and we will send out a reminder message at that time.
Thank you!
Please Note: DNS-OARC will be hosting a separate, one day technical operations meeting on Feb 2, prior to the Symposium. Due to the cross-functional nature and limited time available for the Symposium, DNS-OARC has graciously coordinated a day to accommodate technical discussions that otherwise would not have been possible at the Symposium. All Symposium attendees are welcome and encouraged to attend this pre-Symposium event. See https://www.dns-oarc.net/node/163 for more information.
About the Symposium
The Global DNS Security, Stability, and Resiliency Symposium seeks to involve participants from a wide range of areas to collaborate on cross-functional solutions to DNS issues. The Symposium will present, integrate, and expand on previous research and work and use three focus areas to guide the analysis (enterprise reliance on the DNS, DNS use in resource constrained environments, and malicious use of the DNS). The goal of the symposium is to understand the underlying risks, identify relevant stakeholders, collaborate on potential solutions, and build a cross-functional strategy to address the root cause of DNS risks. Participation in the symposium is by invitation only.
How does this symposium differ from other security conferences?
This symposium is the first of its kind and differs significantly in scope and purpose from other conferences. This symposium will bring together people with differing backgrounds and experiences to develop a cross-functional strategy (e.g. technical AND operational, not just technical), to address DNS risks. For example, attendees at this symposium will represent internet engineers, security experts, service providers, registry operators, enterprises, registrars, policy makers, software developers, and hardware manufacturers. This is not a purely technical, operational, or policy conference – aspects of all three areas will be discussed as each offers a relevant perspective.
Is there a conference registration fee?
No. There is no registration or participation fee. Attendees will be responsible for their own travel arrangements. Breakfast, lunch and breaks will be provided by ICANN and GTISC during the symposium.
Is there a registration deadline?
We’d ask that you respond to dns-ssr@gtisc.gatech.edu with your intent (affirmative or negative) as quickly as possible, but by Dec 31st, 2008 at the latest.
Is assistance available for visas and letter of invitation?
Yes. You will receive registration information via email; please indicate that you need a letter of invitation and provide us your nationality, profession, and passport number. We will send you the letter of invitation back via email. If you have any special requirements or need further assistance, please contact us at dns-ssr@gtisc.gatech.edu.
Is funding assistance available for travel to the Symposium?
Funding may be available for economy class round-trip airfare to the Symposium; you will be responsible for all other costs associated with attending the Symposium. If you work for a non-profit organization, are in an emerging economy, or require travel aid for some other reason, please contact us at dns-ssr@gtisc.gatech.edu with a short note as to why you require funding. Our goal is to make the Symposium as accessible to the widest cross section of participants possible; we hope that making travel funds available will allow those who would otherwise be unable to attend, to participate in the Symposium.
Is there a call for papers?
No. This symposium is a “working conference” where everyone in attendance will have the opportunity to share their thoughts within the different breakout sessions. Some preliminary material will be presented at the start of the symposium to frame the breakout sessions.
What do I get out of this symposium (aka why should I come)?
You have been recognized in your field by the steering committee and we believe you can contribute to developing a strategy for reducing the risks associated with the DNS. Your participation is vitally important in developing innovative solutions to the risks Internet users face from the DNS. For those of you who don’t normally attend security conferences, this is your chance to voice your thoughts. For everyone, this is an opportunity to influence the security, stability and resiliency of the DNS. We seek to develop a strategy, not just an approach, to solving issues with the DNS, and we’d like you to be part of its development. And yes, there is always the possibility of cool swag.
Inquires can be directed to dns-ssr@gtisc.gatech.edu.
